What Veo 3.1 is good at
Most video models hand you a silent clip and leave the soundtrack to you. Veo 3.1 generates sound with every clip, so a prompt that mentions a crackling fire, a crowd murmuring or a line of dialogue in quotes comes back with those sounds in place and roughly in sync with the picture. For short social pieces, product teasers and storyboards that need to feel finished, that removes a whole step.
It is also good at following a shot description. Camera language such as "slow dolly in", "low angle" or "handheld, following" tends to be respected, and lighting cues like golden hour or neon reflections land reliably. Where it is weaker is long, complicated action: eight seconds is the ceiling, so think in single shots rather than scenes.
On LazySusan, Veo 3.1 has three ways in. Text to video starts from a description. Image to video starts from a first frame you supply, with an optional last frame for Veo to animate towards. Reference images let you give up to three pictures of a person, product or style for Veo to keep consistent across the clip. Finished videos land in your Library next to everything else you've made.

Veo 3.1 versions on LazySusan
| Version | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 | Best quality. The one to use for anything that will be seen at full size or needs convincing faces and dialogue. |
| Veo 3.1 Fast | Faster and much cheaper, still with sound. Good for drafts, social clips and testing a prompt before a final render. |
| Veo 3.1 Lite | The lowest-cost Veo, with sound. Text and first-frame clips only; it can't use reference images. |

| Veo 3.1 Lite, 8 s at 720p | 480 |
| Veo 3.1 Lite, 8 s at 1080p | 768 |
| Veo 3.1 Fast, 8 s at 720p | 960 |

Every price includes sound. Clips are 4, 6 or 8 seconds, and 1080p is 8 seconds only. To be plain about it: one 8-second clip on full Veo 3.1 (3,840 tokens) is more than Starter's 1,000 monthly tokens, so regular Veo 3.1 work suits Pro (5,700 tokens) or a top-up, while Lite and Fast fit comfortably on Starter. If a video fails, its tokens are refunded.
Every plan includes Veo 3.1. Starter is $8 a month with 1,000 tokens; unused tokens roll over while you're subscribed. Compare plans.
prompts
Prompts to try with Veo 3.1
// product teaser
Slow orbit around a matte black water bottle on a wet slate surface, morning light, droplets running down the side, soft ambient synth and the sound of a tap dripping.
// dialogue
Close-up of an elderly fisherman mending a net on a dock at dawn. He looks up and says, "The sea gives back what you're patient for." Gulls and lapping water in the background.
// establishing shot
Drone shot rising over a foggy pine forest at sunrise, revealing a lake below, birdsong fading into wind.
// food
Overhead shot of a cast-iron pan as butter melts and garlic hits it, loud sizzle, a wooden spoon stirs, steam rising.
// from a first frame
Animate this photo: the curtains drift in the breeze, the cat on the sill turns its head toward the window, distant traffic outside.
tips
Getting better results
- 01Write the sound into the prompt. Veo makes audio either way, but naming it ("muffled bass from next door", "a single church bell") gets you that sound instead of a generic bed.
- 02Put spoken lines in quotes and keep them short. About as many words as a person can say in eight seconds is the practical limit.
- 03Draft on Fast, finish on Veo 3.1. An 8-second Fast clip is 960 tokens; once the framing and motion are right, spend the 3,840 tokens on the final render.
- 04Use the avoid box for things that keep creeping in, such as on-screen text, watermarks or extra people, rather than adding "no text" to the main prompt.
- 05For a product or character that must look the same in every shot, use Reference images with Veo 3.1 or Fast. Lite doesn't take references.

When to pick a different tool
- Runway if you want to restyle footage you already have, upscale a clip, or work in 5 and 10-second lengths.
- Luma if you want 9-second clips, seamless loops, 4K output or ultra-wide 21:9 framing, and can add sound yourself.
- Hailuo if you need lots of short silent clips for less, such as b-roll or social loops.
- ElevenLabs if you need a full voiceover or a longer music track to lay under your clips.
