chatgpt alternatives · updated october 2026
ChatGPT alternatives worth trying in 2026.
ChatGPT is a strong generalist. Each of these is better at something in particular, and most let you test that claim for free.
ChatGPT is where most people met AI, and for everyday questions, drafting and quick images it is still a very good default. But it is one company's assistant, and in 2026 the other labs are not playing catch-up. Claude is often the better writer and editor, Gemini reads enormous files and lives inside Google's apps, Perplexity answers with sources you can check, Grok reads X in real time, and DeepSeek reasons through maths at a fraction of the cost.
This page is for choosing an assistant, whether or not you pay for one. If you already pay for ChatGPT Plus and are weighing what else $20 a month could buy, the ChatGPT Plus alternatives page covers that question in more detail.
Below are the alternatives worth your time, what each is best at, where each falls short, and when ChatGPT is still the right answer.
why people switch
Why people look beyond ChatGPT
- 01You've hit the free plan's limits mid-task and want to know whether another assistant's free tier, or a cheaper plan, suits you better.
- 02You write or edit long documents and find ChatGPT's drafts confident but samey.
- 03You need answers with sources you can click, not a summary you have to trust.
- 04You want a second opinion on something that matters, from a model trained by a different company.
- 05You make images or video as well as chat, and want models ChatGPT doesn't offer.

the options
The alternatives, with their trade-offs
01LazySusan
Not a single assistant but a workspace with ChatGPT's current models, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek, plus image, video and voice tools, on one plan. Multi-Chat sends one prompt to several models so you can compare their answers side by side. Starter is $8 a month with 1,000 tokens, Pro is $19 with 5,700, and Teams is $39 for 5 people sharing 15,600.
- good for
- People who can't pick one alternative because each is best at something different, or who want ChatGPT and the others without paying each company.
- trade-off
- There is no free plan, usage is metered in tokens rather than unlimited, and features that live only in each company's own app (custom GPTs, Claude Projects, Gemini inside Gmail) aren't included. It runs in the browser, including on mobile, with no native app yet.
02Claude
Anthropic's assistant. Free with daily limits; Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly.
- good for
- Long documents, careful editing, analysis and code. Many people find its writing less formulaic than ChatGPT's.
- trade-off
- No image or video generation, and the free tier runs out quickly on long conversations.
03Google Gemini
Google's assistant. Free with limits; Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month and bundles extra storage and Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Drive.
- good for
- Very large files, fast answers, image editing with Nano Banana, and anyone whose work already lives in Google's apps.
- trade-off
- Google's models only. Answers can be brisk where you wanted depth.
04Perplexity
An answer engine: it searches the web and replies with numbered sources. Free with limits; Perplexity Pro is $20 a month.
- good for
- Research, fact-checking, current events and product comparisons where you want to see where each claim came from.
- trade-off
- Built around search. For long-form writing, brainstorming or creative work it is not the strongest choice.
05Grok
xAI's assistant, available on its own and inside X. Free with limits; SuperGrok is $30 a month.
- good for
- What people are saying right now: it searches X posts as well as the web, and answers with less hedging.
- trade-off
- The most expensive of the single-company plans here, and its tone is not to everyone's taste for professional writing.
06DeepSeek
A Chinese lab whose app is free to use, with low-cost models that reason step by step.
- good for
- Maths, logic and coding questions on a budget, and people curious about strong open-weight models.
- trade-off
- Chat only, no image or video. Check whether its data handling fits your organisation's rules before pasting in work documents.
07Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft's assistant, built into Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365, using OpenAI's models alongside Microsoft's own.
- good for
- People who work in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams and want help inside those files.
- trade-off
- Much of its value depends on which Microsoft 365 plan you or your employer has; check Microsoft's current plans. Outside Office it offers little ChatGPT doesn't.
08Poe
Quora's app for chatting with many models and with bots other people have built on them, paid in compute points.
- good for
- Trying lots of models and community bots in one app, including on native mobile apps.
- trade-off
- Organised as a list of bots rather than by tool or project, and image and video models are bots rather than full studios.

Questions about ChatGPT alternatives
It depends on the job. Claude for writing and long documents, Perplexity for research with sources, Gemini for very large files and Google's apps, Grok for what's happening on X, and DeepSeek for low-cost reasoning. If you want several of them, LazySusan puts them in one workspace with ChatGPT's own models.
Yes. Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Microsoft Copilot and DeepSeek all have free tiers, each with its own limits. LazySusan has no free plan; Starter is $8 a month.
Claude, for most people. It handles long drafts well, follows style instructions closely and tends to sound less formulaic. Try the same brief in both before deciding; the difference shows quickly on your own material.
Perplexity is built around it: every answer comes with numbered links to the pages it used. Grok and Gemini can also search the web, and ChatGPT has search too, but Perplexity puts the sources first.
Yes. LazySusan includes all three on every plan, along with Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek. A typical GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5 reply is about 16 tokens, Gemini 3.8 Flash about 6 tokens, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash about 2 tokens and a Perplexity Sonar Pro answer with sources about 38 tokens. Starter includes 1,000 tokens a month.
Not if you export it first. OpenAI lets you download your data from ChatGPT's settings, and LazySusan can import that ChatGPT history so past conversations stay searchable next to new ones.
Neither is better at everything. Claude is usually stronger at long, careful writing; Gemini at speed and very large inputs; ChatGPT at being a dependable all-rounder with images in the same chat. The quickest way to find out for your work is to ask all three the same question, which Multi-Chat on LazySusan does in one step.
This page compares assistants. If your question is whether $20 a month is better spent elsewhere, the ChatGPT Plus alternatives page compares plans and prices for paying subscribers.
