What Luma is good at
Luma's Ray models are at their best when something moves through space: a camera drifting over terraced fields, smoke turning in a shaft of light, a fox crossing snow while the shot tracks it. The motion tends to have weight and momentum rather than the floaty quality some video models fall into, which makes Ray a good choice for establishing shots and anything that should feel like real footage.
Three features set the Luma tool apart. Loop makes the last frame flow back into the first, so a clip can play forever on a website hero or a social post without a visible jump. Extend continues a finished clip from where it stopped, with an optional end frame for where the new part should land. And clips can be 5 or 9 seconds, in shapes from 21:9 ultra-wide to 9:21, at up to 4K.
Photon, Luma's image model, lives in the same tool. It accepts up to four image references, a style reference and up to four photos of one person to keep them consistent, or an image to change. Any Photon image has an Animate button that makes it the first frame of a Ray video, so a still and its motion can come from one place.

prompts
Prompts to try with Luma
// aerial
A hot air balloon rising over terraced rice fields at sunrise, slow aerial drift, mist in the valleys.
// loop
Ink drops blooming in water, swirling indigo and gold, macro, slow motion. Loop on.
// tracking shot
A fox trotting through fresh snow in a birch forest, camera tracks alongside at its height.
// mood
Close-up of rain hitting a cafe window at night, city lights blurred behind, a cup steaming on the sill.
// photon image
Editorial portrait of a ceramicist in her studio, soft north light, clay dust in the air, muted earth tones, 3:4.
tips
Getting better results
- 01Use Loop for anything that will autoplay on repeat. Describe motion that can plausibly cycle, like water, smoke or a slow orbit, rather than something with a clear start and end.
- 02Extend works best when you say what happens next, not what's already on screen. Add an end frame if you know exactly where the shot should finish.
- 03Find the shot on Ray Flash 2, then render it on Ray 2. A 5-second Flash draft at 540p is 170 tokens.
- 04Make the first frame in Photon with a character reference, then press Animate. It's the most reliable way to keep a face the same into the video.
