I love Perplexity. Genuinely. It's replaced Google for my research needs. The way it synthesizes sources, cites everything, and actually answers questions instead of showing blue links is revolutionary. Perplexity Pro at $20/month is fantastic value... for search and research. But here's the thing: research is maybe 20% of what I use AI for. What about the other 80%?
Perplexity Is Unbeatable for Research
Let's be clear: for research tasks, Perplexity Pro is the best. Nothing else comes close. Real-time information, academic paper access, source citations, follow-up questions that build on context—it's genuinely better than Google for finding information. Pro gives you unlimited queries, GPT-4 and Claude integration for answers, and file upload for document analysis. If research is your primary AI use case, Perplexity Pro is exceptional.
The Massive Capability Gap
But here's what Perplexity can't do: generate images, create videos, make music, write long-form content well, handle complex coding projects, or do most creative work. It's a research tool, not a general AI assistant. When I need a blog post, I go to Claude. When I need code, I go to GPT. When I need images, I go to Midjourney. Perplexity Pro covers one use case excellently while ignoring everything else.
The Workflow Fragmentation Problem
Real workflow: Research a topic (Perplexity), write about it (need Claude or GPT—another subscription), create visuals (need Midjourney—another subscription), make a video summary (need Runway or Veo—another subscription).
