What GPT Image is good at
GPT Image is OpenAI's image generator, the one behind images in ChatGPT. Its strength is reading a long brief and keeping track of all of it: six labelled rooms in a cutaway house, a menu with the right items and prices, a four-panel comic where the cat is the same cat in every panel. Where other models drift after the third requirement, GPT Image tends to remember the eighth.
It also handles words well. Signs, packaging, chalkboards, diagrams with labels: the text usually comes out spelled the way you wrote it, which saves a round trip to a design tool.
Editing works two ways. Describe a change to the whole image, or paint over an area and only that part is redone. On LazySusan you also choose quality per image, so drafts can be cheap and the final version can take its time.
The trade-off is that careful costs more. High-quality images are among the pricier single images in the workspace, and the look is clean rather than moody. For atmospheric photography, FLUX often gets there with fewer words; for quick edits to a photo, Nano Banana is cheaper per try.

tips
Getting better results
- 01Write the brief as a list. Numbered requirements are easier for GPT Image to check off than one long sentence.
- 02Put exact wording in quotes and say where it goes: the headline "Grand Opening" across the top in bold serif.
- 03Draft at low quality (8 tokens square) to settle the composition, then render the final at medium or high.
- 04To fix one area, paint it in Edit instead of regenerating. The rest of the picture stays as it was.
alternatives
When to pick a different tool
- Nano Banana if you're making many quick edits to the same photo and want a lower price per image.
- Ideogram if you want typography-led designs with style presets, or to reframe and upscale in one place.
- FLUX if photographic realism matters more than following a long brief.
- ChatGPT if you'd rather talk the idea through first and write the image prompt together.
