Short answer: ChatGPT Business and Claude Team both cost $25 per person per month on monthly billing ($20 if you pay yearly), with a two-seat minimum. For a five-person team that's $125 a month for one of them, or $250 a month if people want both. That's the right buy if everyone on the team uses AI for hours a day or you need admin controls and integrations. If your team's usage is uneven (a couple of heavy users, a few occasional ones), a shared token pool is much cheaper. LazySusan's Teams plan is $39 a month for up to five people with every major model included.
And please don't share one Plus login among five people. More on that below.
What do ChatGPT Business and Claude Team cost?
Here are the list prices in US dollars as of October 2026:
| ChatGPT Business | Claude Team | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard seat, monthly billing | $25/user/month | $25/user/month |
| Standard seat, annual billing | $20/user/month | $20/user/month |
| Premium seat (higher usage) | $125 monthly, $100 annual | $125 monthly, $100 annual |
| Minimum seats | 2 | 2 |
| Uses your data for training by default | No | No |
OpenAI cut the Business seat price by $5 earlier this year, which is why you'll still see older articles quoting $25 and $30. The numbers above are current.
The pricing has converged so completely that cost isn't really the deciding factor between these two. What matters is which models your team prefers and which integrations you need.
The 5-person math
Let's take a typical small team: a founder, a marketer, a developer, a salesperson and an operations person.
| Setup | Monthly cost | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business, 5 standard seats, monthly | $125 | $1,500 |
| Claude Team, 5 standard seats, monthly | $125 | $1,500 |
| Both, 5 seats each, monthly | $250 | $3,000 |
| Both, 5 seats each, annual billing | $200 | $2,400 |
| LazySusan Teams, 5 users | $39 | $468 |
The "both" row isn't hypothetical. In almost every small team I've talked to, the writers want Claude and the people who want images, voice and spreadsheets want ChatGPT. So you either pick one and annoy half the team, or you pay twice.
What you get with the business plans that you won't get elsewhere
I want to be fair to OpenAI and Anthropic here, because the business plans do things a cheaper setup can't:
- Admin controls. A workspace with central billing, user management, and the ability to remove someone's access the day they leave.
- Connectors. Both plans connect to tools your team already uses, so the AI can search your shared drive or docs.
- Agentic coding tools. Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex are tied to these subscriptions. If your developer lives in one of them, that seat pays for itself.
- Per-person limits. Every seat has its own usage allowance, so one heavy user can't eat everybody else's budget.
- The native apps. Custom GPTs, ChatGPT's voice mode, Claude Projects with shared knowledge.
If two or more of those matter to you, buy the business plan for the people who need it.
The problem: most small teams have uneven usage
Per-seat pricing assumes everyone uses the tool about the same amount. In real small teams, that's rarely true. A common pattern looks like this:
- One or two people use AI all day.
- Two or three people use it a few times a week.
- Someone signed up for a seat and has used it twice.
On per-seat pricing, the occasional users cost the same $25 as the heavy ones. You're paying $75 a month for three people who'd get by on a free plan most weeks.
Can we just share one ChatGPT Plus account?
People ask this constantly, so let me answer it directly: no, and not just for policy reasons.
Both OpenAI's and Anthropic's terms say not to share account credentials. Practically, it's also a mess:
- Everyone sees everyone else's chats, including the one where your colleague asked about salary negotiation.
- The memory feature blends five people's preferences into one confused profile.
- Usage limits are per account, so five people hit the cap five times faster.
- When someone leaves, you have to change the password and re-login everyone else.
- Two-factor codes go to one person's phone.
It's the classic Netflix-password problem, except with your company's documents in it.
A shared token pool: how it works for a team
This is the approach LazySusan takes with its Teams plan, and it fits the uneven-usage pattern well. Disclosure: I write for LazySusan, so weigh this accordingly.
- $39/month for up to 5 people, each with their own login and their own private chat history.
- 15,600 tokens a month in one shared pool (600 tokens = $1 of model usage). That's 3,120 per person if usage were perfectly even, but it isn't, and it doesn't need to be. Usage is tracked per person, so you can see who's using what.
- Every model on one plan: GPT-6 and GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro and 3.8 Flash, Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity, plus image, video and voice tools. Nobody has to fight about ChatGPT vs Claude.
- Shared conversations. Share a chat with a teammate and they see the full context and can continue it. This turned out to be the feature small teams use most: one person does the research thread, another picks it up and writes the brief.
- Unused tokens roll over, and you can top up ($5 for 3,000 tokens) when a busy month needs it.
What 5 people's month looks like in tokens
Rough per-message token costs: about 5 for Gemini 3.8 Flash, about 13 for Claude Sonnet 5.5 or GPT-6.1 Sol, about 26 for Claude Opus 5.5. Long threads cost more.
- Marketer (heavy): 250 Sonnet messages for drafts and edits, 30 Opus messages for the important pieces. About 4,030 tokens.
- Developer (heavy, but uses Claude Code for most coding): 200 GPT-6.1 Sol messages for quick questions and reviews. About 2,600 tokens.
- Founder (regular): 150 Sonnet messages, 50 Gemini Flash lookups. About 2,200 tokens.
- Sales (light): 80 Sonnet messages for emails and call prep. About 1,040 tokens.
- Operations (light): 100 Gemini Flash messages for summaries and spreadsheet help. About 500 tokens.
Team total: about 10,370 tokens, comfortably inside the 15,600 pool, with the leftover rolling into next month. If the marketer also generates a few images a week, there's room for that too.
Where the shared pool falls short
The honest list:
- One heavy user can drain the pool. If someone runs GPT-6 Astra (about 66 tokens a message) all day, they'll use a big share of the month by themselves. The per-person usage view helps you spot it, but there's no hard per-seat wall like on the business plans.
- No Claude Code or Codex. Developers who depend on those still need the native subscription.
- No custom GPTs, Claude Projects or ChatGPT voice mode. You get the models, not every app feature built around them.
- Video is expensive. An 8-second clip on full-quality Veo 3.1 costs roughly 3,800 tokens. A team that makes lots of video will need top-ups.
- Five people max on the Teams plan. Bigger teams should look at the business plans.
The setup I'd actually recommend
For most 3 to 5 person teams, I'd do this:
- Give the shared pool to everyone. LazySusan Teams at $39 covers the whole team for everyday writing, research, summaries and images.
- Buy one native seat for whoever needs it. If your developer lives in Claude Code, a single Claude Pro subscription ($20) for that person is cheaper than putting the whole team on Claude Team.
- Review after a month. Check per-person usage. If someone is consistently heavy on one model, a dedicated seat for them might make sense.
That's $59 a month for a five-person team with every model and one dedicated coding seat, versus $125 to $250 for business seats across the board.
If your team is bigger than five, needs SSO-style admin controls, or everyone is a heavy user, buy ChatGPT Business or Claude Team and don't overthink it. Both are good products at a fair price for that use.
