A 2025 matchup, and where Google and OpenAI stand now
This page first compared Google’s Gemini 2.0 with OpenAI’s GPT-5.2. Both have been superseded: Google’s current models on LazySusan are Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and OpenAI’s are GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. We have removed the old scores and limits, which no longer describe models you can use, and kept the parts of the comparison that still hold.
Gemini’s advantage in 2025 was taking in a lot at once, including images, and that is still where it is most useful: very large files, image edits and quick work over mixed media.

OpenAI’s models were the dependable all-rounder for reasoning and everyday writing then, and GPT-6.1 Sol fills the same role now, with GPT-6 Astra for the hardest problems.

Speed and cost
Google’s Flash models have consistently been the quick, low-cost option. On LazySusan today, a typical Gemini 3.8 Flash reply costs a fraction of a GPT-6 Astra reply, which makes Flash a sensible default for routine questions.
