Here's an uncomfortable truth nobody in tech wants to talk about: Chinese AI video generation is really, really good. Kling, made by Kuaishou (China's TikTok competitor), is going toe-to-toe with Runway—and in some areas, it's winning. I've been testing both for commercial projects, and the results might surprise you.
Motion Quality & Physics
Runway has always struggled with physics. Weird gravity, objects passing through each other, that uncanny 'AI movement' we all recognize. Kling? The motion is noticeably more natural. Water flows correctly. Hair moves realistically. People walk without that floaty AI gait. I don't know what they're doing differently, but the physics simulation is significantly better. This was the first thing I noticed and it's consistent across hundreds of generations.
Video Length & Consistency
Kling generates up to 3-minute videos with remarkable consistency. Characters stay on-model, lighting remains coherent, and there's no mid-video 'drift' where things start morphing. Runway Gen-4 caps at shorter clips and even then, consistency wavers around the 30-second mark. For anything longer than a few seconds, you're doing multiple generations and stitching. Kling just... works longer.
Human Generation
This is where Runway still has an edge. Runway's human faces and expressions are more detailed and realistic. Kling can sometimes produce slightly 'waxy' skin or eyes that aren't quite right. For close-up human shots, Runway is safer. But for full-body motion and anything where the face isn't the focus? Kling wins because the movement is so much better.
The Speed Difference
Kling is fast. Like, concerningly fast for how good it is. I'm getting 30-second clips in under 2 minutes. Runway can take 10+ minutes for similar quality. Time is money, and this speed advantage adds up if you're iterating on concepts or producing volume. Whatever infrastructure they're running in China, it's working.
Access & Censorship
Here's the catch: Kling has content restrictions that go beyond just safety. Anything political, anything that might be sensitive in China, gets blocked. For Western commercial use, this can be frustrating. Runway lets you make more varied content. And there are legitimate questions about data handling with Chinese AI companies. If that matters for your use case, it matters.

I know it's not fashionable to say, but Kling is legitimately impressive—often more impressive than the American alternatives we're supposed to prefer. For pure video quality and motion, it's currently ahead. The geopolitical concerns are real and you should factor them into your decision, but pretending the tech isn't good is just cope.
